The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program is dedicated to graduating skilled physicians with a commitment to life-long learning and compassionate patient care. St Vincent’s Medical Center is a 473-bed community teaching and referral hospital with a Level II trauma center and a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, Connecticut. The Medical Center has earned regional and national recognition for the compassion of its staff, our commitment to patient satisfaction and our quality of care. The hospital has an active medical staff of more than 500 physicians representing a comprehensive range of more than 50 specialty and subspecialty medical and surgical disciplines, which allows our residents to gain significant clinical experience. Our residents receive broad exposure to internal medicine in both inpatient and outpatient settings through our inpatient units, intensive care unit, our outpatient Family Health Center, subspecialty community practices and Urgent Care Centers.

Residents get significant experience in ambulatory care, inpatient medicine and all of the medical sub-specialties. Residents attend Grand Rounds and the core lecture series in the Department of Medicine as well as didactics specific to each of their rotations. The Chair and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director work with each resident to fulfill the requirements for a clinical year in their chosen field.

Residents present at clinical conferences during each of the three years of training. Each resident is responsible for reviewing a paper for a journal club and giving one or two noon conferences on a topic of his or her choice.

Diagnostic Radiology residents are exposed to patients with a wide range of medical needs. State-of-the-art equipment and facilities include 3 diagnostic CT scanners, a dedicated 4-slice CT unit for the radiation oncology service, a 1.5 Tesla MRI unit, routine diagnostic rooms, fluoroscopic rooms with cine capabilities, an all-digital modern angiographic suite, and ultrasound and nuclear medicine units, including a fixed PET/CT scanner and gamma cameras, all digital with SPECT capabilities.

The department averages more than 130,000 examinations annually, including approximately 60,000 diagnostic examinations, 2,000 nuclear medicine studies, 10,000 ultrasound studies, 30,0000 computerized tomographic scans, and 2,500 interventional procedures that include arthrography, myelography, hysterosalpingography, cholangiography, vascular angioplasties and endovascular stenting, uterine fibroid embolization, uroradiological nephrolithotripsy, radiofrequency ablation and MRI scans performed in the MRI center.
